Strong roots, new paths — Symrise benefits from its strong roots and its determination to continually forge new paths. The challenges presented by climate change, limited natural resources and societal change can only be overcome through unified, immediate action. In close collaboration with our partners along the entire value chain, we develop new concepts that make both sustainability and economic success possible. The main goals for Symrise are to make our corporate activities climate-positive by 2030 at the latest and to meet the ambitious ESG requirements of our stakeholders with a high degree of transparency. By achieving profitable growth in a sustainable way, we will secure the future viability of our company.
In 2020, Symrise will continue to combine its resources and skill sets in new ways to ensure it stays successful and sustainable, says CEO Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Bertram in this interview.

At the “Hemp Day,” Symrise demonstrated how the ever more important raw material can be sustainably cultivated and processed.
Clove is an important raw material for Symrise. The company has developed a process in Indonesia that conserves resources when cultivating the spice.
In the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal grows a fruit whose flavor and fragrance is used in food and beverages, cosmetics, household cleaning products and perfumes: the grapefruit. The company is dedicated to working closely with suppliers of the agricultural sector in the region.
In order to support young employees and keep them committed to Symrise for the long term, the company has developed a digitally supported process that meets the challenges of a quickly changing world.
In collaboration with Unilever and a number of non-governmental organizations, Symrise has launched the project “Vanilla For Change,” which benefits vanilla farmers in Madagascar and young people in England.
Symrise has had a successful year. These successes allowed the company to grow in 2019.
Symrise developed two perfumes for the Brazilian cosmetics giant O Boticário – nothing new – and the creative process was supported by algorithms and artificial intelligence. The “Philyra” project gives us a glimpse into the future.
The eco-design matrix developed by Diana Pet Food analyzes, measures and optimizes the environmental performance of products all along the value chain. This changes the company’s environmental footprint, from the development of raw materials to purchasing, research and development, production and logistics.
The concept of the circular economy is growing in importance worldwide. In many areas, Symrise is applying principles that take byproducts of production and use them to manufacture valuable products.
Symrise has implemented the first application of Sulfacid® technology in the fragrance and flavor industry. Exhaust fumes from production are desulfurized at the plant in Jacksonville, Florida. The environment benefits from this and Symrise also saves on costs.
Symrise invests globally in new industrial facilities and renovations and expansions of existing production sites. The Symrise subsidiary Tesium is responsible for many of the plans and supervises all the sites from Holzminden.
Symrise works sustainably, and this has been recognized by a number of organizations and competitions worldwide. Here are a few examples of awards the company received in 2019.
